Get a taste of everything engineering has to offer before choosing your discipline! Faculty from every department at Smith Engineering teach our first-year students, giving them insight into every facet of engineering – while students take on not only coursework but hands-on design challenges.
Engineering students are randomly divided into sections consisting of groups of 20-60 students. Each section has its own schedule, but there is considerable overlap with other sections attending larger Lectures. Tutorials always consist of just one section, and labs generally consist of two sections at most. For projects you will work in groups of four.

Smith Engineering is unique in offering a no-cap, no-quota choice of discipline at the end of your first year. January brings Discipline Nights – nightly deep dives into every area of engineering, with faculty, students and alumni shining light onto what makes their area of focus so special. Then, in February, students get to pick their discipline of choice. Provided you pass all your first-year classes and select your discipline by deadline, you are in. This guaranteed choice makes your first year even better: students aren’t battling for grades or spots in their preferred program, so they can collaborate, communicate, and explore engineering as part of the world-famous Smith Engineering community.
You will be choosing from these 10 disciplines:
