A message from Dean Kevin Deluzio:
I am pleased to announce that as of February 1, Dr. Kevin Mumford, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, has been appointed as the inaugural Associate Dean of Interdisciplinary Programs at Smith Engineering and the academic lead for our Reimagining Engineering Education initiative.
Initiated by the $100M donation from our alumnus, Stephen Smith, this initiative seeks to redefine what it means to educate engineers by creating a more inclusive, interdisciplinary, and impactful learning environment that helps to prepare the next generation of engineers to advance the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals and address complex global challenges with ingenuity and compassion.
It’s an exciting time for Smith Engineering as we move from our first phase of developing the foundational elements and concepts of the Reimagining Engineering Education initiative to a phase of implementation and growth.
Thanks to the work of Sarah Kauffman, who led the first phase of our initiative, Smith Engineering is well positioned to watch the seeds planted in the first 15 months begin to bear fruit in the upcoming academic year.
We have a great deal of work ahead of us, but I am confident that in his new role, Kevin will work closely with faculty, staff, students, and external partners to ensure that our core values of excellence, community, innovation, and humanity become part of the fabric of our efforts to lead the way in redefining engineering education for the future.
Please join me in congratulating Kevin on this well-deserved appointment.
