Dr. Ali Etemad, an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, is this year’s recipient of the Smith Engineering Excellence in Research Award.

This award recognizes outstanding contributions by faculty members to the research environment in Smith Engineering. Recipients receive a $10,000 grant to support their research. The award honors early- and mid-career faculty for their research leadership and efforts to foster collaboration within the faculty, the university, and beyond, both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Etemad holds the Mitchell Professorship in AI for Human Sensing & Understanding and has received multiple awards for research, teaching, and supervision. He is internationally recognized for his expertise in Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, a field dedicated to understanding and interpreting human activities and internal states, such as emotions and health, through various types of data, including wearable sensors, cardiac and brain signals, video data, and speech. His innovative work has meaningful applications in health, well-being, and overall quality of life. A central focus of his research is embedding Responsible AI principles—such as fairness, privacy, and security—into the development of systems that interact with users.
