Congratulations to Elizabeth (Lizzie) Bygott who is the 2023 recipient of the Xiaoting Liu Memorial Award, in recognition of her contribution in creating a welcoming environment for all chemical engineering graduate students as well as for her liaison role to ensure graduate student feedback and concerns are communicated.
This award was established by friends and colleagues of Xiaoting Liu (1962-1995) in the Department of Chemical Engineering, in her memory as a dedicated researcher, and as an individual with a great sense of humanity and humility. It is awarded annually to a graduate student who has, through their kindness and personal efforts, enhanced the quality of the teaching and learning environment for students in the Department. Applications and nominations are evaluated by the Coordinator of Graduate Studies and the Head of Department in consultation with graduate students.
Lizzie is a highly respected role model and mentor in the Department of Chemical Engineering. Her knowledge, dedication and patience make her a very sought-after Teaching Assistant. She recently received a Dean’s Teaching Assistant Award from Smith Engineering. Additionally, Lizzie was last year’s President of the Chemical Engineering Graduate Student Association (CEGSA), where she worked hard to bring graduate students together and provide social engagement and professional mentorship for some who might not have otherwise had the opportunity. In her various CEGSA executive roles, Lizzie makes every effort to be inclusive, she works tirelessly to ensure a positive atmosphere is created for all graduate students in the Department.
“In short, Lizzie’s commitment to professionalism and inclusion as well as her generous spirit and encouraging nature has been greatly appreciated throughout the Department,” said newly appointed Head, Robin Hutchinson.
