Prospective students of Smith Engineering can now schedule a guided tour of the Faculty.
While tours are not new at the campus level, this new tour option focuses exclusively on the Steven J.R. Smith Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science and is guided through the eyes of those most qualified to talk about it – our students.
Student-led tours are now open for prospective students and their families/supports to sign up.
Our tour guides walk their guests through two key engineering buildings, Beamish-Munro Hall and Mitchell Hall, giving them all the must-know facts about our leading national engineering programs while sharing the kinds of tips and insights only students can provide.
“The student experience and community, together with the innovative curriculum and experiential learning opportunities are what really make Smith Engineering unique and special,” says Marianna Kontopoulou, Associate Dean (Academic). “I encourage our guests to register for one of the tours, led by current students who are excited to share their first-hand experiences and enthusiasm.”
The Smith Engineering Tour takes approx. 45 minutes, with our guides happy to answer questions both during and after the tour. For guests who also plan to attend the main campus tour, this allows time to fit both into their day. Smith Engineering tours are booked in small groups, allowing guests plenty of opportunities to speak with our student tour guide and learn more about their experiences and advice, gaining a more personalized perspective.
The two featured buildings are central locations for Smith Engineering students. Beamish-Munro Hall is the main engineering student hub. It houses multiple extracurricular spaces, including space for our design teams to manufacture, assemble, and store projects on their way to national and international engineering competitions. The building also features engineering classrooms, workshops, and study spaces throughout.
Mitchell Hall, the newest building on the Queen’s campus, opened in 2019. It features our Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering lab spaces, as well as multidisciplinary and entrepreneurial spaces.
Yahya Mohamed, one of the Faculty’s tour guides, is a great example of the personal connections that these tours provide. As a student in Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering, he not only shows students the buildings, but is excited to share his insights and enthusiasm about his studies.
“I believe tours are one of the best things you can do to help with choosing a university,” he says. “I always love answering questions during tours and seeing how curious the students are about Smith Engineering. You don't just see the places where you will spend the next four years. You get to know your tour guide and ask us questions you won't find the answer to online. Tours give a new perspective on the university.”
Smith Engineering Tours are free to all, with registrations available online. Visitors are also welcome to self-tour with self-guided tours available at Student Services in Room 300 of Beamish-Munro Hall should they visit when a guide is unavailable.
