Congratulations to our lead Chemical Technologist, Kelly Sedore who is a winner of the Queen’s University 2022 Special Recognition Staff Award!
Human Resources and the Principal’s office partner annually to present the Queen’s Special Recognition for Staff Awards. These awards recognize staff members who make outstanding contributions, both directly and indirectly, to the learning and working environment at Queen’s University. Award winners are nominated by their colleagues as either individuals or as a team.
Kelly has consistently gone above and beyond in duties as technical support for chemical engineering. What really sets her apart is the leadership role she has taken on within the department, FEAS, and across the university as a champion for safety. As the Departmental Safety Officer and Co-chair of the FEAS Joint Health and Safety Committee, she is a big part of why Chemical Engineering is recognized as having among the highest safety standards across campus. It is common consensus from students, faculty, and staff that Kelly is a role model and the gold standard for safety.
“Kelly is a safety champ who has always helped our grad students to follow the highest standards in terms of safety. She doesn't only enforce the safety measure needed in our lab, but also takes the time to explain the importance of following them and teaches students on specific aspects of safety making particular emphasis on potential weaknesses in safety based on observation and visits to the facilities. Kelly also goes beyond expectation in her work and assists our grad students whenever they need help with the use of a specific tool or procedure. Additionally, Kelly is an elected Employee Sponsor Representative of the Joint Sponsors Board of the University Pension Plan (UPP) and has a Union Role in CUPE 254 as the Health & Safety, Return to Work and Accommodation representative. These activities are an important part of Kelly's professional development over the last 15 years, keeping her connected with a wide variety of individuals across campus, keeping her informed of goings on, developing leadership skills, and in general going beyond what is required of her to benefit as many people as possible across Queen's.
