Kent Novakowski is a Professor of Civil Engineering, and Associate Vice-Principal (Research) at Queen’s University. Dr. Novakowski obtained his PhD in Hydrogeology from the University of Waterloo in 1992. He has specialised as one of only a few hydrogeologists across the globe with extensive experience in the hydrogeology of both crystalline and sedimentary fractured rock. Dr. Novakowski also conducts research in numerical and semi-analytical model development with application to heat and solute transport problems in fractured rock. He has recently embarked on a new project to explore CO2 sequestration in fractured crystalline rock (see Research Interests). His graduate students have come from a variety of backgrounds including civil engineering, geological engineering, and geology. He has supervised more than 45 graduate students, published more than 250 papers and abstracts, and acted as an Associate Editor for Water Resources Research, Journal of Contaminant Hydrology, Ground Water, and the Canadian Geotechnical Journal. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers, and the Engineering Institute of Canada. In 2013, he won the Engineering Excellence Medal given by Professional Engineers Ontario. 

Dr. Novakowski and his research team have recently embarked on a new research area focused on CO2 sequestration in igneous rocks such as those found in the ocean basins around the world and in the Canadian Shield such as can be found to the north of Kingston. To achieve net zero by 2050, gigatons of CO2 must be diverted from emission sources or drawn from the atmosphere, and either stored underground in sedimentary rock or better yet converted to carbonate minerals as can be done in igneous rock. Dr. Novakowski is a participant in the Solid Carbon project based at the University of Victoria, which proposes CO2 mineralization in ocean basalts, and has initiated a local study of the same process in the igneous rocks of eastern Ontario. Early field studies exploring this possibility will be conducted in the summer of 2023 at the Kennedy Field Station described below. These studies will involve tracer experiments between boreholes in discrete fractures using solute and heat tracers, and CO2 dissolved in the injection fluid. The purpose of these experiments will be to resolve the fundamental processes of solute, heat and CO2 transport, the potential trapping and escape routes for gaseous CO2, and the potential for CO2 mineralization at shallow depths. Up-scaling these concepts to full fracture networks at greater depth and broader distribution will follow in subsequent years.

Dr. Novakowski has developed a field laboratory at the Kennedy Field Station near Tamworth, Ontario, which includes an array of nine open wells constructed to a depth of 30-40m in mafic igneous rock distributed around an area of 30m by 65m. The bedrock is covered by a very thin to non-existent soil and the water table resides in the fractures at a shallow depth. Extensive characterization has been conducted on the discrete fracture network to estimate fracture apertures, interconnections between boreholes and to define the primary pathways for fluid migration.

To analyse field experiments Dr. Novakowski works with the finite-element code HydroGeoSphere (HGS), a 3-D discrete-fracture model that accounts for a wide variety of heat transport, solute transport, and flow processes in fractured rock settings. The commercial source for HGS is Aquanty Inc. Dr. Novakowski also works with traditional Integral Transform methods such as the Laplace, and Finite-Fourier transforms for the solution of the partial differential equations particular to hydraulic testing, solute transport and heat transfer problems in discrete fractures.

Dr. Novakowski is seeking MASc and PhD students for research in the following areas:

  • Development of hybrid numerical/analytical methods for simulation of large-scale transport in fractured rock. Prospective students should have a strong interest in applied calculus and coding.
  • Combined heat and solute transport experiments in discrete fractures. The experiments will be conducted between holes at the Kennedy Field Station. Prospective students should have an aptitude for hands-on field work, and an interest in the comprehensive analysis of complex field results.

Other research projects are also possible in the areas of hydraulic testing analysis, interpretation of the distribution of the stable isotopes of water, simulation of large-scale groundwater flow in fracture networks, measurement of hydraulic gradient and groundwater velocity in fracture networks, and basin-scale simulation of isotope transport.
