Jonathan Gammell is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Queen's University and a member of the Ingenuity Labs Research Institute. He is also an Adjunct Fellow of the Oxford Robotics Institute at the University of Oxford where he was previously a Departmental Lecturer and taught at St. Peter's College, Oxford. He studied Mechanical Engineering and Physics at the University of Waterloo (BASc) and Robotics at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (MASc, PhD).

Jonathan leads the Estimation, Search, and Planning (ESP) research group and is focused on understanding the fundamental problems of motion in robotics and using this knowledge to develop better robotic solutions. His work is widely used across robotics from steerable catheters to self-driving cars to full-sized autonomous helicopters and he has collaborated widely with industry and academia, including NASA JPL and Oxford orthopaedic surgeons. He won the CIPPRS award for the top Canadian PhD thesis in medical imaging, computer vision, or robotics, has twice been part of teams that received a NASA Group Achievement Award, and his paper with NASA JPL was short-listed for an IROS best safety, security, and rescue robotics paper award. He publishes his work at international robotic conferences and in top-tier journals and has been invited to talk about it in both industrial and academic settings around the world.
