In 2023, Jamie Van Gulck, Ph.D., P.Eng. accepted the role of Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering at Queen’s University where he completes research into reclamation of industrial developments in cold and remote regions. Dr. Van Gulck has a B.Sc. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Western Ontario, Ph.D. in Geotechnical and Geo-environmental Engineering from Queen’s University and has over 25 years of experience. Dr. Van Gulck is a founding principal of Arktis Solutions Inc., a professional engineering and management consulting firm specializing in geo-environmental engineering and governance within northern Canada since 2007.

In his consulting career, Dr. Van Gulck has served as the lead investigator and engineer for reclamation projects, geotechnical design lead and Engineer of Record for earthworks projects, and development of environmental protection plans for industrial developments. In the northern mining and oil and gas sectors, he is a sought-after subject matter expert and has performed expert reviews of financial reclamation security, closure and reclamation plans, environmental impact assessment, land use permit, and water licence application materials on behalf of industry, Indigenous organizations, governments, and the regulators. He has also acted as subject matter expert, expert witness in public hearings, and has led various technical and engagement meetings with stakeholders within the Canadian Territories.
