NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) - The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) grants research awards for summer employment. The selected students hold the award for 16 consecutive weeks, full time, usually May 1 to August 31.

Requirements
Student must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada;
Registered, at the of application, in a Bachelor’s degree program at an eligible university;
Student must have obtained, over the previous years of study, a cumulative average of at least second class (a grade of "B" or "B-”, if applicable) as defined by the university;
Student must have successfully completed all course requirements of at least the first year of their undergraduate program;
Students in their final program year are eligible to apply providing they are not registered in a graduate program while they hold the award.

Complete Form 202 Part I and II and submit using the NSERC online system. Include unofficial transcript available through SOLUS.

In memory of Charles Allan Thompson, Sci’37, Smith Engineering at Queen's offers four Summer Research Awards to registered upper year students. International students are eligible to apply. Domestic students should apply for the NSERC USRA but will automatically be covered for the Thompson USRA.

The Accelerated Master's Degree program (“Combined BASc/MASc” or the 4+1 Program) allows ECE students to begin work towards a Master's degree while completing their final year of the undergraduate degree. Under this program, undergraduate students must successfully complete a fourth year individual research project course, and may complete up to 6.0 graduate course credits that will count towards their MASc degree. Typically, the research project will be supervised by the ECE faculty member who intends to become the student’s MASc thesis supervisor. It is expected that the Accelerated Master’s program will reduce the time required to complete MASc degree by one or two academic terms. The ECE department will review transcripts each year and invite suitable candidates to apply for this program in their third year of study.

For students considering graduate studies after their undergraduate degree or for students with an interest in exploring in depth some technical area in a more independently-driven research study, there is ELEC 497 - Research Project course. In this course, the student would pair with a faculty member willing to supervise the student on a research project. Students interested in taking research project courses should contact individual professors in their area of interest to discuss potential research topics.
