Selected Topics Courses
Some Selected Topics Courses like MECH 840, 842, 843, 844 provide an opportunity for you to define your own course of study in a specialized area. You can only take one of these courses in your program. There are several steps to register in a Selected Topics Course:
- Defining your own area of interest in detail and the deliverables you think would establish that you have mastered the material. Think about course content, readings, and assessments.
- Identify a faculty member who is willing to offer the course for you.
- Present your ideas to an interested faculty member for discussion and refinement.
- Ultimately it is the faculty member who determines the course requirements, however, you will have a much more positive experience if you take the initiative and do the design work for your course. If you don't take that initiative yourself, you are unlikely to find a faculty member willing to do it for you.
- Submit your registration on an Academic Change Form.
- The form must be accompanied by a printed page detailing the course content (e.g. a selection of text book chapters and journal papers),
- The means of assessment (e.g. a 20 page literature review and/or results of a design process or numerical analysis and/or 10 pages of recommendations for future work, etc.) signed by the student, the instructor, and the MEng Coordinator (or Grad Coordinator for an MASc student).
