Leila Notash, PhD, PEng, FEC For President-Elect A Proud PEO Volunteer for over 20 years (since 2003)
Highlights of my Contributions to Kingston Chapter |
At the Chapter level, I actively worked to raise awareness about the Association's role among Chapter members, with a particular focus on fostering member engagement. I also championed PEO's Equity and Diversity Policy, as well as the Code of Ethics, because I believe that the engineering profession will thrive by embracing the values of ethics, equity, diversity, inclusivity, and indigenization. I have consistently supported genuine initiatives that promote these values. My involvement on the Chapter Executive, combined with my role as a faculty member, motivated me to engage directly with engineering undergraduate and graduate students at Queen's University and the Royal Military College, promoting PEO's values and principles. This initiative helped enhance the perception of the engineering profession and its relevance in broader society. While serving on the Chapter board, I organized annual information sessions on topics such as the Licensure Process for Canadian and International Engineering Graduates, the Legal Responsibilities of Engineers, and the Duty to Warn. These sessions, which included speakers from PEO Admissions, Enforcement, and Standards, were targeted at members, Engineering Interns (EITs), and students to better inform them about the responsibilities and expectations of the profession.
I also raised concerns regarding Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) and its impact on Chapter e-blasts. I was pleased to see that PEO revisited its stance and initiated a process to allow members and EITs to consent to receiving e-blasts with information on Chapter events. As memberships were renewed and the lists were populated throughout 2019, this initiative significantly improved communication and increased member engagement in Chapter activities.
To further enhance communication among the Chapter board members, I prepared the first-ever Terms of Reference for the Kingston Chapter’s committees, including the PEO Kingston Chapter Communications Committee. This effort was instrumental in establishing clearer guidelines and expectations for the committees, ultimately improving the Chapter's operational efficiency.
